Nominations sought for Community Reference Group

Tuesday, 17 August 2010

Eurobodalla Shire Council is reliant on community input to develop the 20 year strategic plan that will set out the priorities and the best way forward for the people, the environment and the economy of our Shire.

Although it is guiding the process in line with NSW Government legislation, and other government and non-government agencies will contribute their ideas, the Mayor Fergus Thomson says eurobodalla 2030 needs to reflect the values and vision of the Eurobodalla community, not Council, in order to be successful as the Shire's highest level strategic document.

"Our first priority at the moment is seeking members for the Community Reference Group which will have an important role in the development of the community strategic plan," he said. "This group will keep us on track and help Council and staff to decide the priorities that should be included in eurobodalla 2030."

Council is actively seeking expressions of interest by 31 August for the 15 member group and more nominations will ensure a good cross section of the community. "We would like to encourage nominations from more women and young people," Clr Thomson said. "This is a 20 year plan, so it is important to try and capture the views of all sections of the community."

Interested people need to be a resident or ratepayer in the Eurobodalla, have links to a local organisation or community, interest or user group, or be a member of one of Council's existing committees.

"People with these connections can bring extensive community knowledge and expertise that will benefit the development of the plan and promote the engagement process," Clr Thomson said. "We would like groups to nominate more than one person if possible, especially women and people of different ages to ensure good representation."

The Reference Group is just one method of engagement to be used in the development of eurobodalla 2030. There will be plenty of other ways to get involved. They include an online survey and discussion, shopping centre open days, focus group meetings, a community summit and feedback boxes in the Shire's libraries.
